Description
Position Overview
The organisation is actively seeking a highly skilled Data & Business Intelligence Engineer to take ownership of designing and implementing centralized intelligence systems. This is a critical engineering role, not a basic reporting function, requiring expertise in data architecture, the development of production-grade ETL pipelines, and the creation of scalable Power BI dashboards. The successful candidate will be instrumental in establishing a "single source of truth" for data across various industries, treating the data pipeline as a core product to ensure data models are reusable and robust.
Position Objective
To architect, develop, and maintain a comprehensive data ecosystem that centralizes disparate data sources, transforms raw data into actionable insights, and delivers high-performance business intelligence solutions. This role aims to empower stakeholders with reliable, accurate, and timely data to drive strategic decisions across multiple operational domains.
Key Responsibilities
As the owner of the data lifecycle, your responsibilities will include:
- Data Hub Design: Designing centralized data hubs capable of ingesting data from various systems, including CRMs, ERPs, ATS platforms, and accounting systems, into structured Azure layers (e.g., Blob Storage, Azure SQL Database).
- ETL Development: Building robust pipelines for data extraction, transformation, cleansing, and validation, incorporating comprehensive error handling and logging mechanisms.
- Data Modelling: Creating efficient dimensional models (e.g., star and snowflake schemas) optimized for multi-industry reuse and analytical workloads.
- Power BI Engineering: Developing executive and operational dashboards utilizing advanced DAX expressions, implementing Row-Level Security (RLS), and optimizing performance for large datasets.
- KPI Frameworks: Implementing sophisticated monitoring logic for Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) with configurable thresholds and complex evaluation logic (e.g., AND/OR conditions).
- Automation Integration: Connecting KPI breach alerts to relevant alerting and workflow systems via automation triggers to facilitate proactive responses.
- Technical Documentation: Maintaining comprehensive data dictionaries, architecture diagrams, and deployment runbooks to ensure clarity and maintainability of all data assets.
Requirements & qualifications
Required Skills (Non-Negotiable)
The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in the following areas:
Power BI
3+ years of experience with Power BI, demonstrating advanced proficiency in DAX, Power Query (M language), and a proven track record of building complex, multi-tab executive dashboards.
Data Modelling
Expertise in dimensional modelling, entity-relationship design, and data normalization techniques specifically for analytical workloads.
ETL / Pipelines
Experience with production-grade ETL pipelines using technologies such as Python, Azure Data Factory, dbt, SSIS, or equivalent tools and frameworks.
SQL
Advanced proficiency in SQL, including the use of window functions, Common Table Expressions (CTEs), stored procedures, and performance tuning techniques.
Azure
Practical experience with core Azure data services, including Azure Blob Storage, Azure SQL Database, or Azure Data Factory.
API Integration
Ability to consume and integrate with RESTful APIs, handling authentication, pagination, and robust error recovery mechanisms.
Multi-Source Data Integration
Demonstrated experience integrating data from at least two different system types (e.g., CRM and Accounting systems).
Documentation
Ability to produce high-quality technical documentation, including architecture diagrams and detailed integration specifications.
Communication
Professional English communication skills, with the ability to proactively explain complex architectural decisions and collaborate effectively.
Valued Differentiators
- Experience with advanced cloud data platforms such as Azure Synapse, Snowflake, Google BigQuery, or Databricks.
- Specific experience in recruitment analytics, including ATS pipelines and fill rate calculations.
- Background working with data environments in manufacturing or healthcare sectors.
- Knowledge of KPI automation via tools like Power Automate or webhooks.
- Familiarity with CI/CD practices for Business Intelligence assets and version-controlled data pipelines.
Working Arrangements
- Fully Remote: This role is fully remote, with performance measured on deliverables and output rather than fixed hours.
- Timezone Overlap: A minimum 4-hour daily overlap with Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST/AEDT) is required.
- Communication: Participation in weekly synchronous check-ins via Slack and Teams is expected.
- Version Control: All work must be committed to version-controlled repositories.
